First announced back in May, the Explore 3D app is one click away under Samsung's SmartHub interface. From there, this app allows users to access dozens of pieces of free 3D content, including movie trailers, music videos, TV shows and other content. Last we checked there were even a couple of full length films included for free (IMAX 3D titles), so you get up and running with good 3D quickly. The company also expects to offer a library of sreaming pay-per-view options at some point. Our editor checked several of the Explore 3D titles out first hand and found the quality to be quite good, assuming you have the network bandwidth to stream them.
Of course, this set also does Smart TV (or any other content, for that matter) in 2D -- and with a full 1080p HD picture, when it's available on your source, of course. YouTube may not always give you demo quality material, but it does offer hours of entertainment. If you're looking for something a little more high-def, the Smart TV platform allows you to stream content from web-based services such as Netflix, VUDU and Hulu Plus. There's also audio from Pandora, web-based calling from Skype (with Samsung's CY-STC1100 Smart TV Camera), and tons of other downloadable Samsung Apps. Just know that subscriptions and fees for certain services may apply. If you want to surf the web while surfing channels, that's also an option. The Smart TV platform includes a web browser, so you can check email, news and the occasional eBay auction or even browse Big Picture Big Sound's home page.
As we found out upon setup, however, one of the UN55C8000's dirty little secrets is the need for input adapters (included, at least) to handle many of the audio/video/data inputs, converting for example the R/G/B RCA-type plugs of component video to a single mini-plug. Apparently even the width of a single RCA plug was considered too costly from a depth perspective, hence the adapters. Among the many perks of industry-standard HDMI: The plug is nice and flat, so it is accepted as-is by the TV, although any HDMI cable used must be 0.55 inches thick or less. I have to wonder too if the two rear-panel USB ports, so handy for a quick photo slideshow or throwing on a little MP3 music or home videos, could not have been placed in a more convenient spot (the side, perhaps) to give easier access to those folks mounting the TV right against the wall. We used the shiny four-footed swivel stand that comes bundled with the TV.
1080p Resolution: The LED-LCD television displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.
Full HD 3D (via HDMI 1.4): The Samsung ES7500 series LED-LCD TV offers Full HD (1080p) 3D capability. Samsung 3D TV utilizes Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses (four pair included) for a full 1080p 3D viewing experience when coupled with a 3D source, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player or an HD 3D broadcast from satellite or cable providers (connected via HDMI 1.4). The Samsung ES7500 series LED-LCD TV automatically adjusts the overall picture to provide an optimal 3D effect. The Samsung 3D TV also offers a unique feature that allows you to intensify your 2D viewing experience by up-converting it to virtual 3D. In addition, you can adjust the overall 3D perspective (+/-5) and overall 3D image depth (1-10). Samsung 3D TV supports Full HD 3D for 1920 x 2205p (24Hz) or 1280 x 1470p (60Hz) video signals; and virtual 3D for 1920 x 1080p (24/30/60Hz), 1920 x 1080i (60Hz), or 1280 x 720p (60hz) video signals. The Samsung ES7500 series LED-LCD TV offers various 3D modes to match your 3D viewing needs.
AllShare/DLNA Certified: The Samsung ES7500 series LED-LCD TV's AllShare function, along with its DLNA Certification allow you to watch videos (DIVX/MPEG/H.264/WMV), photos (JPEG/PNG/BMP/MPO)), and listen to music (MP3/WMA/AAC/FLAC/OGG) saved on your Windows PC (or other DLNA Certified media server) through the TV via its Ethernet (LAN) port or built-in WiFi (wireless). This eliminates the need to copy your photo, video, and music files to a separate USB storage device.
Samsung Apps: Once you have connected the Samsung TV to your home network, you gain access to Samsung Apps. Samsung Apps lets you download for pay or free-of-charge applications and services to the Samsung ES7500 series LED-LCD TV. You can enjoy a variety of content from various downloaded applications; such as videos, music, photos, games, and news. Samsung Apps has a growing collection of pay and free-of-charge online applications that connect you to some of your favorite online content; such as movies from Netflix or Blockbuster, TV shows from Hulu Plus, videos from YouTube, music from Pandora, and social updates from Facebook or Twitter. Once connected to your home network, you can visit the online Samsung Apps store from the TV's Smart Hub menu and download free Apps or purchase advanced applications. The following App categories are available.
I am neither a videophile nor audiophile. I can tell the difference between SD and HD. If I try really hard, I can tell between 720p and 1080p, between 192kbps and 320kbps. But I don't really care. If I can see and hear, then it's passable to me and that's all that matters to me. Fortunately, most user reviews of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV agree with me on quality, so have no fear.
In the 3D TV game thus far, Samsung certainly has an advantage in terms of sheer diversity, with models sized from 40 to 65 inches and offerings in the LED, LCD, and plasma categories. In its LED group, Samsung's 8000 Series, which includes screen sizes of 46 and 55 inches, sits near the very top of the line and consequently boasts the full complement of advanced video technologies and features. Samsung sent us the 46-inch UN46C8000 1080p TV. Like most of the current 3D-capable flat panels, the UN46C8000 requires active-shutter glasses and uses frame-sequential stereoscopic 3D technology, in which the TV alternately flashes a full-resolution left-eye and right-eye image. (Later this year, we will see 3D-capable flat panels that use passive glasses, but these displays can only show half the vertical resolution with 3D content.) The shutters in the glasses open and close in sync with the signal to direct the appropriate image to each eye; the IR emitter that syncs the 3D glasses with the TV is built into the UN46C8000's front panel. This TV does not come with any glasses, which will run you $150 to $200 apiece. The UN46C8000 supports 2D-to-3D conversion, allowing you to simulate a 3D effect with standard two-dimensional film and TV content.
Given the unit's thin form, Samsung had to get clever in its configuration of the connection panel, using single mini-jacks or mini-ports for many connections and including a whole bunch of adapters in the box. The four side-facing HDMI 1.4 inputs and single RF input don't require adapters, but you'll need adapters for the single component video input, the single PC input, and the Ethernet port. The RF input provides access to the TV's internal ATSC and Clear-QAM tuners, and picture-in-picture functionality is available. The connection panel also includes dual USB ports that support video, photo, and music playback, as well as the optional WiFi dongle and/or USB camera. A mini-plug IR jack (called EX-Link) supports RS-232 for integration into an advanced control system.

The PNC8000's extra video-processing features noted above manifest in a pair of dejudder presets, titled Standard and Smooth, which join our favorite such setting (Off) in the Motion Judder Canceller menu. The Film Mode menu hides the Cinema Smooth setting reserved for 1080p/24 content, although in our testing this mode caused an undesirable loss in black level performance. We really appreciate that, after first selection, it engages automatically when it detects such content. 1e1e36bf2d
