The Tsarnaev Brothers Exchange Fire With Police
On the night of April 18, 2013, the Tsarnaev brothers shot and killed MIT police officer Sean Collier, then carjacked a Mercedes SUV and drove to Watertown. There, they encountered several police officers who tried to stop them. The brothers opened fire with handguns, rifles, and homemade explosives, sparking a fierce gun battle that lasted about 10 minutes.
One of the residents of Watertown, Andrew Kitzenberg, live-tweeted the shootout from his apartment window. He also took several photos that showed the Tsarnaev brothers crouching behind a black SUV, firing at police. As the shootout continued, Tamerlan Tsarnaev ran out of ammunition and charged at the police officers. He was tackled by one of them and fell to the ground. Meanwhile, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev got back into the SUV and drove towards his brother and the officers, apparently trying to rescue him or run them over.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev managed to escape the scene, but not before hitting his brother with the SUV and dragging him for several feet. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after. He had multiple gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma.[^1^]
